Tips for Working More Efficiently

1. Begin the day with prayer
Start the day off with praying to God for strength and guidance. Spend time with God in the morning by reading God’s word, praying, and listening for his direction. Ask God to order your day and ask for the wisdom to make wise choices. This helps to lay a foundation for your day.

2. Prioritize your day in advance
On the night before write a list of things to do for the next day. Take your time, plan your day, and think about the important task, phone calls, reports, etc. List them in order of priority. Cross off each task as you complete it. If there is something still left on the list carry it over to the next day. Don’t sweat it. The work will still be there. If you fail to plan then you plan to fail.

3. Start from the most difficult to the least difficult
Most of us are more alert and sharper before lunch, so the advice here is begin with task with the most thought intensity. On the other hand, schedule less difficult task, meetings, conferences later on during the day. After a heavy lunch, most of us have less energy and may be less productive. However, if you are the type that accomplishes much during the afternoon, then adjust your schedule accordingly. Know when you are the most productive.

4. Take a lunch break away from the desk
Don’t work while eating lunch. Take time away from your desk and enjoy your lunch alone or with a co-worker. As well as taking two 10-15 minutes breaks, one in the morning and one during the afternoon. This is a time to refresh your mind. You will find yourself more productive by taking time away.

5. Organize your workspace
Clutter and piles of paperwork can have a major negative impact on your productivity. The goal is to work smart and not hard. So, keep files in order and shred things you no longer need. Keep the desk clean and orderly. Clear the clutter and you will clear your mind. File papers away as soon as you can and don’t procrastinate. File items away in a space that is easy to remember and access.

6. Save personal matters for your own time
We seldom realize the ripple effect that the occasional personal call can have on our day. The constant interruptions can take away from the project or task at hand. Then we find ourselves stressing about not getting it done. Try to save personal matters during your breaks. Be vigilant about it and your work will get done a lot faster. Also, keep socializing with co-workers to a minimum. It’s easy to get caught up in office gossip. But, this could lead towards not getting anything done and increase stress level.
